Hypervision Invitation

Westport Arts Center, 2006

4-color offset

6" x 8.25"

Curator Denise Markonish conceived Hypervision as an exhibition of work that brought viewers into a space of increased perception and made them conscious of the physical act of looking. Janine Antoni’s photographic documentation of her piece “Mortar and Pestle” seemed like the perfect piece in the show to provoke that feeling.

This typographic treatment draws attention to the individual parts of the exhibition’s title by hyphenating it unnecessarily. In addition, the awkward and quirky strokes one wouldn’t see in “normal” text sizes of American Typewriter are amplified by the extreme contrast in scale between title and quotation.

Hypervision Title Wall

Westport Arts Center

A title wall for the current exhibition greeted visitors when they entered the gallery. The signs beneath the title listed upcoming events related to the current show and gave the names and dates of the next two scheduled exhibitions.

Hypervision Window Signage

Westport Arts Center

4-color ink jet on plastic cling

To take advantage of the Art Center's location on a high traffic street, but avoid violating the historic town's strict building code regarding exterior signage, each exhibition was publicized with window cling signage installed on the interior of the windows.

Stalking Suburbia Invitation

Westport Arts Center, 2007

4-color offset

8.25" x 6"

This postcard is an example of a Westport Arts Center’s typical exhibition invitation. The artist-supplied images were low resolution, so the design could not rely upon the photographs alone. Instead, the design plays off of the sinister title and one of the show’s themes—artificiality—using a color palette and “decoration” pulled from suburban Connecticut’s immaculately manicured lawns.
